(Mykonos Island lies 150 km south -east of Athens. Native population is approximately 8,500 and covers an area of about 88 sqkm.) Mykonos belongs to the Cyclades group of islands located in the centre of the Aegean Sea. It is a small island yet offers much more than many of the big islands do. Mykonos is a famous international holiday resort, as well as a celebrity spot, attracting several thousands of visitors from all parts of the world. It has maintained its appeal as a world-famous holiday destination providing a nice climate, beautiful beaches, ample services and facilities as well as a vibrant nightlife scene in Mykonos town. (Delos Ancient Island. Area: 5 sqkm. Distance from Mykonos: 6 nautical miles -half an hour by boat.) The sacred island of Delos was, in the myths, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Today the island is uninhabited: it is a vast archaeological site whose superb monuments draw thousands of visitors in pilgrimage to what was, for a thousand years or so after the 9th century BC, the political and religious centre of the Aegean. Now the houses, temples, statues and pathways are there to remind us of the wonders of that civilization. There is also a museum with sculptures of the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods, together with a collection of vases from various periods. The experience of seeing a glimpse of the ancient civilization is well worth it!
